Art galleries and antiquaries

If you are interested in art and antiques then Amsterdam is really a city worth visiting because Amsterdam has over hundredth art galleries and more than 150 antiquaries.

Most of these galleries and antiquaries (70 in total) you can find in the Spiegelkwartier which lies just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum. After the Rijksmuseum was built in 1900 this specific area really developed into the centre for antiques in Amsterdam. Here you can find large collections of paintings, ceramics, glass, jewellery, furniture, coins, books and much more. But in the Rokin area you can also find a lot of art galleries and antiquaries.

If you are specifically looking for pieces from the fifties, the Art Deco period or the Jugendstil period you are best off going to the Jordaan where you can browse around in the many different and cosy antique stores.

Also two international auction houses Christie´s (Cornelis Schuytstraat) and Sotheby´s (De Boelenlaan 30) are located in Amsterdam.

To see which art galleries and antiquaries are located at the Spiegelkwartier and to read up about its history you should visit www.spiegelkwartier.nl.

For more information about the two auction houses you can visit www.christies.com or www.sothebys.com
