The Wegewijs family started running this shop more than 100 years ago. On offer are around 50 foreign cheeses and over 100 domestic types, including gras kaas, a grassy-tasting cheese that is available in summer. Pleasingly, you can try the Dutch varieties before you buy.

Since 1922, Huize van Wely has been hand-making exquisite sweet confectionery at its factory in Noordwijk, on the west coast of Holland. Less of a night shop and more of a deli: quiches, pastries and salads are made on site, and there’s also fruit and veg. Be prepared to ask for what you want here - there’s no self-service. Its branch is known as ‘Champagne Corner’, which hints at what’s on offer.
