Heemskerk

Heemskerk

Heemskerk, originally a small market gardening village, has grown into a large residential community of more than 36,000 inhabitants. It is known to have been in existence since 1063. Assumburg Manor, Marquette Castle, Fort Veldhuis, centuries-old churches and other historical buildings attest to its rich history.

Heemskerk is separated from the beaches of the North Sea by the 5 km wide dune area known as the North-Holland Dune Reserve, a paradise for cyclists and walkers. The broad beach can be reached by bicycle or on foot.

The town has many facilities, such as an atmospheric shopping parade with a varied range of shops. There are also masses of opportunities for sport and leisure. The many pasturelands and an avenue of parks and ponds make Heemskerk into a green heartland in the north of the Randstad. And all this fifteen minutes away by train from Alkmaar and Haarlem and less than half an hour from Amsterdam Central Station.
