Homo-monument

Gay-monument in Amsterdam

Opened in Amsterdam on the 5th of September 1987, the gay-monument was designed to "inspire and support lesbians and gays in their struggle against denial, oppression and discrimination” and to help others to be reminded of that.

Amsterdam’s gay-monument consists of three triangles made of pink granite which together form another big triangle. The triangle symbolises the pink triangle, which gay men who were imprisoned in the concentration camps of the Nazi Germans had to wear. In this period over 50,000 gay men were killed.

Every line of the triangle represents a deeper meaning. The first represents a warning from the past, the second represents a confrontation with the present and the third represents an inspiration for the future.

The monument was designed by Karin Daan and is situated next to the Westerkerk in Amsterdam.
