Red Light District

If you have already visited the Red Light District (RLD) in any major city, such as London's Soho, you will  know what to expect.  However, since Holland has a much more tolerant attitude towards drugs and prostitution than its European neighbours, in Amsterdam everything is a lot more upfront. A wide selection of hash, skunk and weed can be found in its many coffee shops, as well as mushrooms and other psychedelic delicacies. Tables and chill out areas are provided for customers to enjoy their purchases in a comfortable surrounding.  Sex shops, peep shows and brothels cater for "the oldest vice", there are a lot of prostitutes both by day and night.

Exploring this area of Amsterdam obviously requires extra alertness and care- this is the darker side of sightseeing in Amsterdam. The red light district is basically a safe place and during the day it seems more like a neighbourhood. This is why many people work and live there. But after dark you should hold onto your handbag and wallet and if you see an unsavory character skulking down the end of a dark alleyway, it´s best to avoid that direction.

The four rules how to behave in the RLD:

1) Do not take pictures of the occupied windows, respect their job so no laughing out loud etc.
2) The area is extremly overcrowded, so watch out for pick-pockets
3) Walk in groups to avoid any unwanted attention
4) Do not buy bikes or drugs from dealers
