Skateboarding, Inlining & Skating

Skating is big in the Netherlands; there are three types of skating: skateboarding, inline skating and ice skating. Skateboarding is not a typical Dutch sport; however it is very popular amongst youngsters. The parks are perfect for skate boarding and some even offer an excellent half-pipe. Skate boarding on the streets is also allowed, but not recommended.

Inline skating and roller skaters can flow easily on the bike paths or through the Vondel Park. If you like skating in a big group, check out: Friday Night Skate. This is a popular summer tour of 3.000 skaters through Amsterdam. This 15 kilometre (9 miles) tour starts at 8pm at the Film museum in Vondel Park and continues through the centre of Amsterdam. It is recommended to wear knee pads, wrist guards and/or other protective material. Addresses to rent gear:

And then we have the most popular sport in Holland: ice skating. If the winter is cold enough, the water ways freeze and if the ice is thick enough to skate on it, the Dutch organize a race, named the Elfstedentocht. The Elfstedentocht is a 200 kilometres long race around Friesland. With up to 10.000 people taking part, it is a massive national event. In order to join this race you have to be a member of the Elfstedenvereniging association. However, the last time this race took place was in 1997 and ever since the ice hasn’t been thick enough for the Elfstedentocht.

Despite the climate changes, it is possible to skate on ice at the Jaap Edenhal, which is a 400 metres ice track at Radioweg 64 [+31(0)02 6949652]. It is possible to skate inside or outside the track. If you don’t have ice skates, you can rent them at the Jaap Edenhal. On Saturday you can disco ice skate from 8:40 to 11:30pm.

The Vondeltuin rents skates per hour (E5,00) or per day (E15,00). They also offer skate-workshops, a ´steptocht´ through the Vondelpark and Amsterdam. You can also have lunch and diner at the Vo Read More...
