Taxi in Amsterdam

What does a taxi cost?
The price for a taxi ride is always based on a number of factors. There is, however, a maximum to all the component parts of the total price. Please feel free to ask the taxi driver for a receipt. Ask in advance what the approximate cost of the ride will be. Always check the pricelist that should be visible on the outside and inside of a taxi. Ensure that the taxi driver always turns on the meter, even if you have agreed upon a price in advance. If after the ride the price on the meter is lower than the agreed price, you should pay the meter price. If the meter price is higher, you should pay the agreed price.

How do you recognise a taxi?
There are many big and small taxi companies in Amsterdam. Every taxi owner is allowed to determine himself how his taxi should look. There are also a number of external identifying marks by which you can recognise a taxi:

1) a blue license plate

2) a driver’s pass on the dashboard

3) pricelist visible inside and outside

Where do you find a taxi?
You will find taxis at the official taxi ranks, for instance at Schiphol, near the Central Station and around the Dam (see attached street map of the centre of Amsterdam). You are not compelled to take the first taxi in the line but you may choose yourself which taxi to get in. You may also stop a taxi in the street. However, remember that it is not allowed to stop at many places in the centre. In such cases, taxis are not allowed to stop to let you in or out. You can also order a taxi by telephone. In the pink section of the telephone book or in the Yellow Pages you will find a lot of companies under the heading ‘taxi’. You could ask of course one of the employees in your hotel or in a restaurant to call you a taxi. There are no call out charges.

Do you have complaints?
If you are not satisfied with the service or the fare, you can lodge a complaint with the taxi company. In such cases, always make a note of the name of the taxi driver and the number of his driver’s pass or the number plate of the taxi. Ask the driver for a complaint form. You can also get a complaint form at the post office or you can download one, see

Or visit one of the information offices: Stationsplein, Central Stationplatform 2, Leidseplein or Schiphol Airport.
