Terschelling

The island is known best for three things:

The first one is being the only Wadden island where cranberries grow. In 1840, a barrel of cranberries (that sailors would eat to prevent scurvy) washed ashore on the island's coast, and the cranberries, finding the environment favourable, established themselves on the island. Nowadays, the cranberry fields cover 0.48 km². The cranberries are mainly sold to tourists and used by the island's restaurants.

Secondly for the yearly Oerol-festival during which theatre-performances are played throughout the island, making use of its landscape and nature. Oerol is usually held during summer, in July.

The third thing Terschelling is known for a good-time isle. The tourist industry is the most important source of income. Furthermore, there is some agriculture. In the north you can find a 30 km long and sometimes 1 km wide beach. There are many dunes on the island. Some are sandy, some have plants and other even have trees which create a forest. 80% of this island is a nature reserve area in which 600 different plants are growing. The rest consists of villages, roads and cultivated meadows.

West Terschelling is the largest village and has a 55 metre high lighthouse. The Brandaris, which is the name of the lighthouse, is not open to the tourists. The island has several villages such as Baaiduinen, Midsland, Formerum, Lies, Hoorn and finally, Oosterend. Besides West Terschelling, Midsland is the only village boasting an authentic village center.
